Groveland Fire Department Provides Holiday Cooking Safety Tips

GROVELAND – As the holidays quickly approach, Chief Robert Lay and the Groveland Fire Department would like to remind residents to take safety precautions while preparing meals for family and friends.

According to the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services, cooking was the leading cause of residential fire injuries in 2015, resulting in four civilian deaths, 80 civilian injuries, 30 firefighter injuries and an estimated $10 million in property damage.

“Keep yourself and others safe this holiday season by being alert in the kitchen and always monitoring what you have on the stove or in the oven,” Chief Lay said. “If you haven’t already, test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to ensure they’re working properly so you will be alerted in the event of an emergency.”

To avoid tragedy this season, Chief Lay recommends that residents follow several safety tips outlined by the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services:

Additionally, the National Fire Protection Association discourages the use of turkey fryers, as the amount and high temperature of the oil used can cause serious burns and injuries, and result in the destruction of property.

Residents who would like more information on holiday cooking safety should contact the Groveland Fire Department at 978-374-1922.
