Groveland Fire Department Extinguishes Two-Alarm House Fire

GROVELAND — Chief Robert Lay reports that the Groveland Fire Department battled a two-alarm house fire today.

At approximately 11:30 a.m., Groveland Fire received a report of a fire at 21 Wood St. from a neighbor who noticed the blaze.

Upon arrival, firefighters on Groveland’s Engine 1 and Georgetown Ladder 1 saw fire and smoke coming from the second floor of the 1 1/2-story, log cabin style home.

The resident, who was home at the time of the fire, had safely exited the house.

Crews began an interior attack on the second floor, and a second alarm was called for additional manpower. The West Newbury and Haverhill Fire Departments, along with Trinity EMS, arrived on scene to assist while the Boxford and Merrimac Fire Departments covered the Groveland fire stations.

Firefighters put out the fire — which had started in a bedroom, and began extending into the hallway — by noon, but remained on scene until 1:30 p.m. ventilating and overhauling the interior. No injuries were reported.

“Crews did a nice job today getting to the fire quickly and preventing extension and significant structural damage,” Chief Lay said. “The fire was contained to the room of origin with heavy smoke damage to most of the structure.”

Chief Lay estimates damage at approximately $40,000. The house is currently uninhabitable.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but is believed to have started from an unattended candle.
