Groveland Fire Department Extinguishes Two-Alarm House Fire

GROVELAND – Chief Robert Lay reports that the Groveland Fire Department extinguished a two-alarm house fire this morning.

At 7:49 a.m., the Groveland Fire Department received a report of a house fire at a residence on Sunset Circle, across from 908 Salem St.

Groveland and Georgetown firefighters arrived to the ranch, wood frame home, which is under construction and the only residence on the new road.

Crews were met with heavy smoke and heat inside the house, and were initially led by Georgetown Deputy Fire Chief Rusty Ricker on the interior attack.

Shortly thereafter, a second alarm was ordered, and the Boxford and West Newbury fire departments arrived to assist, while the Haverhill and Merrimac fire departments covered the Groveland stations.

Further entry into the home revealed that the fire had destroyed a large portion of the first floor, with extension into the basement.

Crews had the fire was under control by 8:39 a.m., but remained on scene until 11:45 a.m. putting out hot spots and overhauling the interior.

No injuries were reported and no one was inside the home at the time of the fire.

The home sustained extensive structural, heat and smoke damage.

“This fire was well extended prior to our arrival,” Chief Lay said. “It was a difficult fire to fight based on where it was located in the structure, but crews did a great job making an aggressive interior attack to put out the fire as quickly as possible.”

The origin of the fire remains under investigation by the Groveland Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

“We have no reason to believe that this fire was the result of suspicious activity,” Chief Lay said. “After an initial investigation, we believe the cause of the fire to be accidental.”
