Groveland Fire Department Battles House Fire on Wednesday

Police, State Fire Marshal Investigating

GROVELAND — Fire Chief Robert B. Lay reports that the Groveland Fire Department battled a house fire this afternoon that caused significant damage to a house.

Groveland Fire struck an alarm at approximately 1 p.m. Wednesday for the house at 237 Main St., a short distance away from the Central Fire Station. Crews were on hand within minutes and reported fire and smoke showing on arrival.

Chief Lay ordered a full one-alarm response, which brought in mutual aid from Georgetown, West Newbury, and Boxford.

The fire was knocked down, and there were no injuries to residents or first responders.

The origin and cause are under investigation. Chief Lay requested Groveland Police and the State Fire Marshal’s Office to respond to the scene to investigate the fire.

Boxford Fire Department crews covered the South Groveland Station, while a West Newbury engine provided additional manpower in the cold weather, and the Georgetown Fire Department provided their ladder truck at the scene of the fire.

Chief Lay praised the work of fire crews.

“Our Groveland firefighters arrived quickly and were able to save this home despite a quickly growing fire and extremely cold conditions, which always make firefighting difficult,” Chief Lay said. “I also want to thank our neighboring communities for their support and mutual aid this afternoon.”
