This weekend, the Groveland Fire Department was the host community for the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy’s Mobile Training Unit (MTU). The MTU is a large trailer with props simulating conditions of a structure fire. Firefighters are able to practice fighting kitchen fires, bedroom fires, and other room and contents fires. There are multiple entrances to the trailer in order to mix up the scenarios in which the Firefighters train in, including an entrance from the top of the trailer to simulate basement fires. Firefighters are able to sharpen skills in hose handling, nozzle theory/operation, team movements with hose handling, tactical ventilation, hydraulic ventilation, search and rescue, and thermal imaging cameras. The MTU feeds fires through propane and comes with multiple safety features to facilitate a safe training environment to practice skills.

Groveland Fire Department officers were also given the opportunity to be in the trailer with the hose teams. Through observation with thermal cameras, officers observed and evaluated how the teams worked together, and identified any skill deficiencies for further training. GFD also trained in radio communications from inside the trailer to incident commanders who were outside of the building. Overall this training was extremely valuable, and a good time was had by all who participated.

Firefighters from Georgetown and Boxford also participated in the training evolutions. Training took place at Strawberry Fields and was provided free of charge by the MFA and Department of Fire Service
